Never in a million years did I think so many people would reach out with questions about adding an egg yolk to their coffee, but turns out y’all are as crazy as me… and I’m here for it!
I have always loved a good morning cup of coffee but hated the early afternoon crash. I’m talking, after that last sip I better hit it hard and get everything I need to get accomplished DONE because the energy burst is only gonna last so long before the downhill hits me like a freight train.
That is what sold me on the yolky coffee!
I have followed along with other freak shows for a while now that drink these concoctions daily and have been posting about all the nutritional benefits ; So I finally drank the koolaid… or should I say egg?
Egg yolks contain a number of vitamins including B12, B2, A, and folate. Egg yolks are also one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D which is essential for healthy bones and teeth. Just like vitamins, minerals are also essential for our bodies to function and contribute to our overall wellbeing. Egg yolks contain many minerals including phosphorus, iodine and selenium.
Protein and essential Fatty acids? Check. Check.
and we all know when we pair the right combo of protein, fat, and carbs together, it better balances our blood sugar which is VITAL when fighting inflammation and ultimately disease.
SOOOOO basically it’s the thrifty version of a high end and slightly over priced vitamin supplement, and we all already know I’ll do just about anything for a good deal.
So now I drink raw egg yolks.
I’m not a scientist or a doctor, and I don’t claim to be an expert but I this is personally what I have noticed when I drink an egg yolk or two in my coffee:
- Its creamier.
- I don’t experience any kind of caffeine crash.
- I feel better
- I get more done.
- I’m a nicer person.
- and if I hadn’t put it there myself, I would have no idea it was there.
Here is my recipe and it’s pretty darn satisfying
Step one:
Brew your desired coffee
Step two:
Crack your egg (or I use two) and separate the yolk from the white.
I have found that rinsing the yolk with cool water helps to make sure it is fully separated, plus I find the process oddly satisfying.
Step 3:
pierce the egg “sack”and allow the yolk to pour into your mug then discard the membrane (that a disgusting word but whatever)
Step 4:
Add your desired sweetener – I love to use Maple syrup or Brown sugar to taste but around a Tablespoon (add more If you like it sweet)
Step 5:
Add a swirl of cream + cinnamon (which has big studies showing it also helps to regulate blood sugar levels)
froth that together and top off with brewed coffee.
Boom. Done.
Let me know if you are weird enough to try it and what you think!
